I must say that I am DYING to get my hands on a copy of this debut novel by Jennie K Brown! I love when I discover an author who has totally original ideas and knows how to execute them. Don’t disappoint me now, Jennie. 😉
Ok, let me show you what I’m babbling on about….
Poppy Mayberry, The Monday
by Jennie K Brown
Series: Nova Kids #1
Publication: September 13th 2016
Category: Middle Grade
Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal, Magic
What if your teacher could read your mind just because she was born on a Thursday? Or the kid next to you in class could turn back the clock just because he was a ‘Wednesday”? In the quirky town of Nova, all of this is normal, but one thing is not—Poppy Mayberry. As an almost-eleven-year-old Monday, she should be able to pass notes in class or brush her dog, Pickle, without lifting a finger. But her Monday telekinesis still has some kinks, and that plate of spaghetti she’s passing may just end up on someone’s head. And if that’s not hard enough, practically perfect Ellie Preston is out to get her, and Principal Wible wants to send her to remedial summer school to work on her powers! It’s enough to make a girl want to disappear…if only she were a Friday.
Poppy Mayberry, The Monday sounds like such a unique book! I can’t wait to read it. What gave you the idea to write a “weekday power” story?
Thanks so much! The story behind Poppy is actually pretty random. The idea actually came to me when I was stopped at a red light in my hometown. I glanced up at the Starbucks on the corner across the street to see a young girl tossing a ball into the air. From the angle I watched, it looked as if the girl was controlling the ball with her mind. At pretty much the same time I asked myself, “What day of the week is it?” (I have a tendency to lose track of the days over the summer!) And then I put those thoughts together – What if a person had certain magical powers depending on the day of the week? Or what if a person had a special power specific to the day of the week in which they were born? And that’s where I got the concept for Poppy’s quirky town of Nova. Inspiration can strike anywhere!
What grade level do you teach? What has been your most memorable experience as an English teacher?
I teach 9th graders. My district is very small, so I actually teach every single 9th grader in the district. My most memorable experience as an English teacher would be each time I find the right book for my students! Reading truly does takes you places and opens your eyes to so much!
Your bio doesn’t say much about your personal life. Do you care to share an interesting tidbit about yourself?
Sure! Well … although I always knew I wanted to be a writer, I didn’t always want to be a teacher. In fact, I went to college for television broadcasting. After an internship that I didn’t enjoy so much, I decided to try out teaching, and I quickly fell in love with it! There’s nothing better than sharing a love for reading and writing with hundreds of students!
Do you have any pets?
I do! I have two dogs. In fact, Poppy’s dog Pickle is inspired by my little yorkie Gia. My other dog is a miniature labradoodle. They are both super cute and super friendly!
What kind of work can expect from you in the future, after your current series?
Right now I am working on a few middle-grade projects. One is cooking inspired and the other a darker MG mystery! I have started a few young adult works and work on them when I need a bit of a break from the MG writing.
Will Poppy Mayberry, The Monday be available for Kindle readers?
It sure will! Poppy will be available in paperback, hardback, and ebook! 🙂
Thank you so much for taking the time to give readers a glimpse into your world. In case I haven’t mentioned it, I NEED this book. Do I have to share the giveaway with everyone else? LOL. I’m totally joking, readers. I wouldn’t hold out on you! Thanks again, Jennie. I look forward to each and every one of your upcoming books.
