Toni @ My Book Addiction: I am a huge fan of The Walking Dead and would love to know your thoughts about the show, the writing, the characters, etc. Also would love it if you could pick one scene over the last 8 seasons and post a quick summary rewrite to make it better or simply different. Everyone has their opinion about how something on the show could be better if it was [insert just about anything. lol] Do you have one of those instances for The Walking Dead?

X. Culletto: What a fun question! After some deliberation, I’ve decided to go way back to vintage TWD and change the ending of season 2.

The cool night air warned him that summer was dying. The marshes around Hershel’s farm would soon freeze over, allowing the monsters easy access to the stately white house. Easy access to Lori and the unborn child…
A new wave of determination steeled in Shane’s gut.
Rick marched loyally through the dark forest at his side, but he was no fool. Rick knew exactly what Shane was doing. What he had to do.
Rick had proven to be a terrible leader–unwilling to do what it took to survive. But Shane could do it. Had done it. He was the only one who could keep Lori and Carl alive. So when it came down to it, he was left with no other choice.
The trees dissipated and an open field spread before them. The moon hid behind a thick blanket of clouds, keeping everything shadowed.
Shane stopped.
“So this is where you plan to do it?” Rick asked.
It was good that Rick had accepted his fate. Two alphas fighting for leadership always got messy. Maybe this would be easier than Shane thought.
“Good a place as any,” he replied.
“Let’s have the balls to call this what it is,” Rick replied. “Murder.”
Shane didn’t reply. Crickets filled the silence with an eerie chorus.
“You really believe,” Rick went on, “if you walk back onto that farm–no me–no Randall–you really believe they’re going to buy whatever bullshit story you cook up?”
“It ain’t gonna be easy, but Lori and Carl– they’ll get over you. They done it before,” Shane said. “They just gonna have to.”
Shane raised his gun and pointed it directly at Rick’s heart.
“You’re gonna kill me in cold blood?” Rick’s raw voice rose. “Screw my wife? Have my children– my children– call you daddy? Is that what you want? That life won’t be worth a damn. I know you. You won’t be able to live with this.”
“What you know about what I can live with? You got no idea what I can live with, what I live with! You wanna talk about what I can do, Rick? Here’s what I can do.”
His finger pressed backward on the trigger. A round let loose and half an instant later bedded itself deep into Rick’s chest.
For a split second, Rick’s face registered shock, then fell dully as life left him. He dropped to his knees, and then to his face.
The crickets continued to chirp into the stillness.
A sense of relief swept over Shane. Finally it was over. Finally he would be free to keep his family safe without hindrance.
He turned back to the woods, leaving Rick for the walkers. By the time they finished, no one would be able to recognize him.
Rubbing a hand over his bare scalp, Shane headed back to the farm.

Toni @ My Book Addiction: Thank you so much for sharing this! It was a pleasure reading your rewrite and I can’t wait to read Girl VS. I hope to have you on the blog again!
