Can fighting for the right side be the wrong thing to do?

Draven, the tyrant ruler of Elyndia for the last one thousand years, searches for the one who can fulfill his prophecy.

The Paladins, an elite band of warriors sworn to protect their way of life at all cost, search for the one with the ability to bring their world crumbling down.

An innocent girl, tormented by demons only she can see, lives on the brink of insanity and longs for a life of peace.

When seventeen-year-old Jade Rosenberg reads from an antique book, she has no idea she just read an incantation awaking her inherited power. But when opposing—and equally terrifying—groups invade her home, she learns she is descended from an enchanted realm and a member of a powerful race thought to have been hunted to extinction.

Ripped from her world, Jade is forced to seek refuge from those who want her dead. She is given one of two options and the time has come for her to make a choice: assassinate their sworn enemy…

Or sacrifice her soul.

My Thoughts

This cover screams: READ ME NOW! doesn’t it? I was drawn in before I knew what the book was about, though it’s obvious that Awakened fits right into the fantasy genre. And fantasy you shall receive!

Our main character is Jade, a seventeen-year-old seemingly normal girl, living with her grandfather, Walter, and his assistant, Maggie. We are introduced to Jade’s ability to see demons in the first few pages of the book. After unknowingly casting a magical spell from an ancient grimoire, then finding a magical dagger in her grandfathers storeroom, she learns that her parents weren’t just run-of-the-mill folks, and that Walter and Maggie aren’t simply dealers of antiquities. Jade is thrown into action almost immediately, being transported from the antiquities shop to the magical land of Elyndia simply by wielding the dagger. Jade is transformed from awkward school girl to being a sacred Elemental, full of guts and glory, hunted by malevolent forces, in a fairly short time. She becomes a badass heroine that I enjoy reading about. The world of Elyndia is everything you want in a magical land, full of all sorts of creatures, vivid imagery, and even some darkness.

Kriston Johnson packs a lot of action into this debut fantasy tale, and even a bit of romance. The world-building is excellent. I was able to place myself in Jade’s shoes while reading, the vivid colors and magical world were clear in my mind. For the most part, the characters were well fleshed out. I had a pretty good sense of who everyone was, and what their role was in the story, although there was a character that was thrown into the mix without much introduction, which I found slightly unsettling to my reading experience. The story was also a bit confusing for a while, and felt a bit scattered, but once it takes off the action is exhilarating.

In the end, this was a good debut novel, and I am certainly interested in reading more of this series. I do hope more questions will be answered in the next book. I recommend Awakened for all fans of the fantasy genre.

About the Author

Kriston Johnson lives in Southwest Washington with her husband, teenage son, and miniature Australian Shepherd. Her home rests at the fringe of an old growth forest that she insists is the home of Jason Voorhees. Her husband thinks that’s a ridiculous assumption, because everyone knows it’s really Bigfoot. Every summer Kriston participates in the annual pilgrimage to Faerieworlds, a real life faerie realm here on Earth, and has an unhealthy obsession with Star Wars, The Vampire Diaries, and Iron Man. Awakened is her first novel.
