The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars, One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.

Pay close attention and you might solve this.

On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.

Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention, Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?
Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.”

~My Thoughts~

Am I the last person on the planet to read One of Us is Lying? Maybe, but I don’t care about that. I’m going to share my thoughts here anyway.

The synopsis opens by comparing the book to The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars. Other than the character types, this was nothing like The Breakfast Club so you can take that out of the equation. It didn’t even cross my mind again after the introduction. It was comparable to Pretty Little Liars, but still quite unique and relevant to the world we live in today. McManus touches on issues we deal with every day in our lives–from childhood bullying to extreme terror in our school systems.

When I first started the book it took a little time to keep the characters sorted, as it’s told from four different points of view. That’s perfectly normal. These are four ‘people’ I just met. Every once in a while I would have to flip back to see whose name was at heading of that segment. After a few chapters, I recognized their distinct voices and settled into a groove. From that point on there was no stopping me. I was so enthralled by each character’s story and the mystery of the plot. I couldn’t stop reading. I still can’t believe this is a debut novel.

I will definitely recommend One of Us is Lying to fans of contemporary mystery/thrillers! I’m looking forward to the next book by this author Two Can Keep a Secret due out February 2019…just in time for my birthday!
