Cassie Forrest could almost believe life at Kingdom Come Farm is perfect, with Adrian and her friends at her side and spring on the way. The spring thaw also means millions of defrosting zombies, however, and if the past year has taught her anything, it’s that life in this new world is highly imperfect.

When Safe Zones throughout the country begin to disappear and the zombies at the fences grow in number, Cassie clings to the hope that if she has the people she loves most, it will be all right. But the highly imperfect world makes only one guarantee—zombies never die, never stop and are never satiated.

~Guest Post~

zOctober is my favorite month of the year, and I’m lucky enough to have been asked back for 2014’s festivities by the lovely Toni Lesatz.

If you’ve read my book, Until the End of the World, then you know that Cassie’s parents were preppers–people who store supplies for a catastrophe, whether that catastrophe is global, personal or, as it turns out, zombie-related. And they’re not all bonkers like you’ve seen on TV, wielding AK-47s and threatening the lives of their neighbors.

Some preppers plan to bug out–leave for somewhere safe. Some plan to bug in–stay home and wait it out. Most are ready to do both. And most, with the exception of the ones in the news, aren’t hoping for the apocalypse. I know I’m not. It’s fun to imagine the zombie apocalypse, but I’m pretty certain the reality is terrifying, stinky and very, very dirty. And I like hot showers. A lot.

Some of you may still think preppers are out of their minds, but I think you wouldn’t be here unless you thought that maybe, just maybe, it’s a good idea to be ready for the zompoc. So I’ve created a handy-dandy (and completely accurate, of course!) flowchart to help determine your chances of survival. It’s gonna get rough out there.

Good luck!

~About the Author~

sarah lyons fleming

I’m a Laura Ingalls devotee, wannabe prepper and lover of anything pre-apocalyptic, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic—-or anything in between. Add in some humor and romance, and I’m in heaven.

Besides an unhealthy obsession with home-canned food and Bug Out Bag equipment, I love books, making artsy stuff and laughing my arse off. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, I now live in Oregon with my family and, in my opinion, not nearly enough supplies for the zombie apocalypse. But I’m working on it.

Seeds, water, food – would be on the top of my list but I always forget something on vacation so I know I would definitely forget something for the end of the world.

  • Sabrina Taylor

I would look for food, ammunition/weapons and medicine. There are so many things you would be needing but those three would be the first I would be looking for.

  • Becky Stephens

Water/food, weapons, and medicine are at the top of my list.

Being on the edge of town it looks like I’ve got a 50/50 shot. Lucky for me our house already looks abandoned so I think we’d be overlooked by scavengers. (There are some long-term perks to not mowing your lawn).

  • Michelle Willms

I live in a really crappy area, so when we’re overrun, we’ll buckle down, let the neighbors get devoured, then scavenge the houses.
