ABOUT CONTAMINATION: The infection has begun, ravaging the American Southwest and leaving a chaos in its wake. In this new world, there will be no last meal, no dying wish. The only reward left is to survive another day…
First, please tell us a bit about your Contamination series!
The Contamination series is based on a single premise that, as far as I know, hasn’t been done before. What if you couldn’t trust what you ate or drank? What if items in the food or water supply were contaminated, causing a zombie outbreak? The story revolves around several sets of characters as they attempt to navigate the new world. My goal was to create a story that twists some of the tropes of the zombie genre, while at the same time keeping a lot of the elements I love. Hopefully people will have as much fun reading the series as I had writing it. ☺
How do you construct the world of Contamination? What part does familiarity or your own proximity play in the locale?
The Contamination series takes place in the southwest, which is where the virus first breaks out. Although I’m from the east coast, I’ve traveled extensively throughout the US, and I’ve always had a fascination with the desert. The idea for the story originated from reading a news article online about a man who owned his own town in Buford, Wyoming. According to the article, the man was the sole resident, and he owned a gas station in the town and was the only person living on the premises. The article sparked the idea for Sam Cooke (the storeowner in Contamination 1: The Onset), whom I envisioned as a lonely character with a broken past. Before I knew it, I’d thrown zombies into the mix, layered in a conspiracy, and sprinkled in some sadistic survivors.
Do you feel there are any zombie themes that are overused?
I think there are definitely scenarios that are used frequently, but I think it’s up to the author to twist the genre and make it their own. The best books I’ve read are where the author has something different to keep things interesting.
If your series were to be made into a movie, what actors(s) would you want cast as your main character(s)?
I would say Patrick Wilson as Dan Lowery, Bryan Cranston as Sam Cooke, Rooney Mara as Delta, and Ronnie from the Jersey Shore as Howard Barrett.
When you’re not writing, what do you do for fun?
I’m also a musician, so when I’m not writing, you can find me banging on my electronic drum set or playing electric guitar. I love the outdoors and hot weather, and I have a four-year-old son that keeps me busy!
How likely would you be to survive the zombie apocalypse?
I’d like to think I’d survive a long time, but realistically, I’d probably be taken out in the first week. ☺
What would you miss most if the world as we know it ended?
Fresh Pizza and power to run my musical instruments.
What items would you stockpile for in preparation for the zombie apocalypse?
Plenty of canned food, weapons, and some books to pass the time while I’m waiting to be eaten.
Do you have any other books in the works for the future, aside from the Contamination series?
I just released a werewolf-type story called OUTAGE, which is the first installment of a new series I’ve started, and I have a new post-apocalyptic series in the works with Bobby Adair called THE LAST SURVIVORS, which should be out at the time of this interview. Thanks so much for including me in the event, and for putting this whole thing together!
Thanks so much for being here, T.W. If anyone has any other questions for him, feel free to ask in the comments!
