A prison doctor injects a condemned serial killer with a formula designed to keep his consciousness awake while his body rots in the grave. But all drugs have unforeseen side-effects. Before he could be buried, the killer wakes up. Hungry. Infected. Contagious. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang…but a bite.

~My Thoughts~

As many people who read my blog know, I am a fan of all things zombies. That may be an understatement, but true nonetheless. I am also a fan of Jonathan Maberry’s work. I have only previously read the Rot & Ruin series, but loved every bit of it. I tend to lean more toward YA books; perhaps that’s why it took me so long to start reading this series. Dead of Night is very much in the adult category. TV-MA LSDV would most certainly appear in the upper right corner of the television if we were watching it right now.

Dead of Night is unlike any zombie book I’ve read before. It’s comprised of more intricate detail than I thought possible in one story. It’s brilliant. As a writer, and someone who has only managed to write 3/4 of a full length novel (it’s harder than you might imagine), it blows my mind that Maberry can create such complex storylines with so many variables. The man is up to his eyeballs in imagination and talent.

Was it my absolute favorite zombie story of all time? No. I’ll admit I found myself skimming through paragraphs at times once I hit the halfway mark. While the story was engaging and the action was intense and often gory, there was a lot of information to process. Truckloads!

I did enjoy most of the characters and found the explanation for the outbreak to be unique and terrifying. I was constantly on the edge of my seat as the story unfolded with new twists around every corner. Nothing happened the way I expected, which makes this story a real gem. Will I read the next book in the series? You bet! Will I recommend this series to my zombie-loving friends? To those who haven’t read it yet–absolutely!
