Lucy Donovan was supposed to have a weekend of fun in the sun, celebrating her upcoming graduation from college. In a split second, everything changed. A drunk driver ended Lucy’s mortal life.

Lucy opens her eyes to a world she never imagined possible and a new destiny: as a Patronus, a guardian of spirits. Adjusting to her new role and abilities while negotiating this confusing realm will test her limits and push her further than she ever dreamed she would go. From wayward spirits who don’t want her help to soul stealing vampires, and even a stuck-up British royal, Lucy must brave them all to save one spirit she can’t bear to lose.

Further complicating her life is an inexplicable yet growing connection she feels to a member of her team, Max, whose mysterious behavior leaves her both confused and intrigued.

Waking up dead was just the beginning of her problems. Lucy’s death is about to become the greatest adventure of her life.

~My Thoughts~

Awaken strikes you like a gut punch straight away. I’m not exaggerating. Lucy, the main character… she dies in the second paragraph! I went from smiling and thinking about how funny it is that my 9-year-old daughter loves Bon Jovi one minute, to feeling my jaw hit the couch cushion beneath me the next. I had to flip back to make sure I hadn’t double (or triple) tapped, skipping several pages.

Nope. She was really dead that fast.

The good news is Lucy is starting a whole new life in another realm. The Patroni have requested to have her soul remain with them so she can be trained instead of moving on. What is a Patronus you ask? Well, the quick answer is a supernatural being that helps souls transition while protecting them from being stolen by other supernatural beings such as vampires and werewolves. The author provides a detailed history, to which I was thoroughly impressed.

I fell in love with the cast of characters immediately. By the time I was 7% into the book I didn’t even care that Lucy had died. I felt bad for her parents and especially her little sister for a minute, but quickly moved on. I didn’t get the chance to know Lucy alive, and the lifestyle of a Patronus is similar to that of a human, so the quick transition didn’t bother me at all. Lucy had an awesome future ahead of her for many reasons. Reason #1….

#LuckyGirl #HotForMax

Lucy had no idea why she felt so strongly for Max immediately after meeting him (can you blame her, though? She quickly learns there is a reasonable explanation. One that her new friend and roommate, Cassie, won’t give up. She’d have to hear it from the blue-eyed hottie herself. I was thrilled to learn that it was more than just insta-love thrown in for no good reason. I have to admit, I was worried for a brief second or two. I was also very pleased with the speed at which the story flowed. No details were skipped, but the story never dragged either. There was plenty of action mixed in with the romantic elements.

Awaken is a really well-written first book in this series and I’m so glad I finally read it. What the heck took me so long? It’s been on my TBR for longer than I’d like to admit. I am really looking forward to diving into the rest of the Patronus series! Fans of fantasy and paranormal with a big splash of action and romance will enjoy this book! Ross is an extremely gifted writer and I will soon be devouring the rest of her books.
