When a nuclear war devastates the U.S., a four-day excursion quickly turns into a fight for survival in The Cave. Six Stanford students journey into one of the deepest and longest caves in North America. A day into their journey, a nuclear war begins from within the U.S. Unable to return to the surface, and unsure what they will find when they do, the Cave will test the strength and survival of each person differently – transforming six individuals into a team, and ultimately…a family.
As many of you know, I’m a huge fan of post-apocalyptic stories. While I immediately expected The Cave to be different from what I normally read within this genre, it was more unique than I anticipated. The story is fairly well-written with some pretty interesting characters as well as a high level of intensity and intrigue. That being said, it still didn’t fall into my favorite type of post-apocalyptic story.
Six students enter a cave to embark on an exciting journey, but all hell breaks loose on the surface within a day’s time. The characters don’t know what actually happened or how bad the damage is because they’re forced further underground to avoid radiation poisoning. The uncertainty of it all makes for a tense storyline. How long will the gang be stuck there to avoid radiation? Will they have enough rations to survive?
This is a thrilling story and I personally know a lot of folks that would enjoy this one. It was definitely worth the read.
