Piper Donovan, an actress who has been having a hard time of it living in Manhattan, has returned home to her parents’ small town in New Jersey. She’s been helping out at her mother’s bakery, which makes it perfect that Piper’s close friend, Glenna Brooks, has asked her to prepare the cake for her upcoming wedding. However, things aren’t as perfect as they seem, and when there is a murder, Piper is determined to figure out what happened and protect her friend.

I was fortunate enough to grab To Have and to Kill while the Kindle edition was free on Amazon. I’m so glad I decided to start reading it yesterday. It was such a fabulous book that I blew through it in less than 24 hours. Besides my obvious obsession with reading and drinking coffee, I love to bake, so the fact that the series is called Wedding Cake Mysteries lured me right in.

This cozy mystery is unique because the main character, Piper, isn’t directly involved in solving the mystery, she just happens to be in the middle as the drama unfolds. Mary Jane Clark did a brilliant job at making me fall in love with some characters and hate others. I would secretly love to be talented enough to have a bakery of my own some day – with a bookstore and exceptional coffee, of course – so even the parts of the story about her parents and her moms bakery kept me intrigued throughout.

I love that I had no idea who the killer was until the end. I thought I had it figured out several times, but I was always wrong! I hate predictable stories and this definitely wasn’t one of them. As soon as I finished the book I clicked on the Kindle Store and purchased the second book in this series, The Look of Love: A Piper Donovan Mystery. I can’t wait to see what Mary Jane Clark has in store for me next…

Happy Reading!
