You’ve made it out of Washington D.C. but the roads are congested. You decide to turn off the interstate and take the back roads. You hope your GPS holds up. You find a rural gas station along the way and decide to stop because you are low on gas. The place is deadly quiet. You fill up your tank and head inside to pay: you’re no crook. There is no one in sight but there are smears of blood all over the floor. You don’t hear anyone, but you decide to investigate anyway. In the stockroom, you find the body of the store owner. He shot himself in the head. A bloody bible lies open in his lap. There is nothing you can do. Before someone else shows up, living or dead, you make a run for it.
