But it turns out (the twist!) that Kathy cheated six years ago — with Gabriel, Alicia’s husband — and it was then that Theo, the true psychopath, broke into Alicia’s house, held her captive and exposed the affair, triggering a long-dormant trauma that incites her to shoot Gabriel in the face.
Why did Theo want Alicia?
He just wanted to open Alicia’s eyes – not actually kill anyone – he defintely didn’t mean to cause any harm to Alicia. So, yes, he wanted to help Alicia. I also think that he was really confused by the painting and wanted to figure out the meaning behind it.

When Gabriel chooses his own life, Theo unties Alicia and leaves her with the gun that she ultimately used to kill her husband. Jean-Felix presents the diary to the police, who make a house call to Theo while he is at home. This section marks the conclusion of the author’s narration.
