Two jumped off the pier that night…but only one came back alive.

Bryn did everything with her best friend Erica. So when someone dared Erica to jump off the pier one night at Harding Beach, Bryn was right by her side. But when Bryn made it back to the surface, Erica was nowhere to be found. Bryn tries to make a fresh start by burying her memories of that awful night. But when a Twitter post from “EricaNShaw” pops up on her feed and a chilling voice mail appears on her phone, she realizes that someone isn’t ready to let go of the past..

My Thoughts

The Dare is a chilling story about Brynna dealing with the fact that after she and her best friend, Erica, jumped off a pier, only Brynna came back up. Brynna feels responsible, to the point that she started drinking and drugging. Her family put her in rehab, sent her to a shrink, and even went so far as to move into a new house and send her to a new school. So, there we are.. fresh start. No one in this new town knows what happened, so Brynna can start to heal and move forward. Or can she? Someone hasn’t forgotten and won’t let Brynna forget either. Is Erica still alive? Her body was never found, so it’s possible. Or is it some twisted prank someone is playing?

I really liked this story. It kept me guessing at every turn, and that always keeps me moving forward. The Dare was reminiscent of stories I’ve seen in movies, but the authors writing really sucked me in and I was able to disconnect from that after a while. The pacing wasn’t always perfect, but it was good enough to keep me interested. I connected with Brynna on some level, probably in the way that I would be scared to death if the same thing was happening to me, which continually nudged me on to solve the mystery. I didn’t like Teddy, Brynna’s love interest, much. He was a one dimensional character in my opinion. But I seriously loved Evan to bits! He may have been my favorite character in the entire story.

The Dare is a good read for fans of thriller and suspense. I will definitely be checking out more books by Hannah Jayne.
