Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

~My Thoughts~

I’ve taken several days to gather my thoughts before sitting down to write this review. I’m still no closer to being able to relay the impact this brilliantly written story had on me.

Speaking as a part of the general public, I think we see so many horrible things happening in the world today that we don’t give every incident the attention it deserves. How can we? It’s overwhelming to look at the world from one person’s point of view. This story says what every person needs to hear. My daughters, 8 and 10 years old, saw the cover and asked me what the book was about, and I found it to be a great opportunity to discuss these issues in today’s society.

Thomas provides a heart-wrenching and honest portrayal of racial issues that are still faced in today’s world. It’s 2017, people. How have we come so far and yet.. we haven’t at all. Hatred, in general, is at an all time high. The world needs healing and we are the only people who can do it. This book will light a fire under anyone’s rear end. At least, that is my hope. Please, everyone read this.

Brilliant, engaging, honest, hit-you-in-the-feels, with a sprinkling of humor in all the right places. There is no book you could read this year that would top this debut novel by Angie Thomas. The Hate U Give is a must read for everyone–regardless of age, regardless of genre preference. READ THIS BOOK ASAP!
