exchange for an honest review
Arianna Grace liked her boring, Midwestern, teenage life where she ignored the many unanswered questions of her childhood. Why were her parents dead? Why did she not have family? Where was she raised until she was five? When someone offers to explain it all, Arianna thinks she’s just getting answers. Instead, she is thrown into a world of night humans who drink blood.
On Arianna’s sixteenth birthday, her world is thrown upside down when she changes into a vampire. Night humans, or demons, as some call them, live in normal society. Learning all of the new rules of a world she didn’t know existed might be hard enough, but it’s further complicated by two former-friends that now want to help her take her role as the successor to her grandfather.
There is a war going on between the night humans. Sides have been taken and lines are not crossed. Four main clans of night humans are struggling for control of the night. Divided into two sides, clans Baku and Tengu have been at war for centuries with the clans Dearg-dul and Lycan. That is, until Arianna Grace finds out the truth; she’s the bridge of peace between the two sides. But not everyone wants peace. With the night humans divided, Arianna is now a pawn in the war between them. She must choose a side—her mother’s family or her father’s—and for once in her life, decide her own fate.
Arianna is about to turn sixteen. One last weekly trip to the movie theater with her friends, Mary Ellen and Trish, reveals that she has a secret correspondent that leaves her notes on her popcorn tub at the movie theater. Suspense builds quickly in this story, as we start to understand Arianna’s whole life is a mystery to her. There is someone who knows the answers she seeks, but she has no idea who that person is or why they are willing to answer questions that her guardians — her aunt and uncle — refuse to answer. Her last note from this mysterious person reads:
“Meet me at nine o’clock, behind the diner. Offer to take out the trash, and make sure you wait out of view of the back door. Don’t wear anything electronic, or any jewelry, or they will track you.
PS: When you pack your bags for your trip, take anything of value with you.”
Well, if that wasn’t enough to get my curiosity juices flowing, check me for a pulse! An orphan with an unknown past? A mysterious stranger that knows more about her life than she does? An obscure road trip planned by her aunt and uncle for her sixteenth birthday? I was hooked on this story from the get-go.
The Legend of the Blue Eyes is chock-full of action. There’s also loads of mystery which had me dying to find out more. Oh, the house is on fire.. OK, well let me just read a little more to find out what the heck is going on and then we’ll jet. The paranormal elements and the royal/ancient aspect of Arianna’s bloodline thrilled me to no end. The storyline itself is full of great promise that provides an exceptional twist on the usual creepy night-stalking creatures. I enjoyed much of the story, but it wasn’t all perfect. At times, it was unnecessarily verbose and felt as if there was too much going on, which made it difficult to follow along. Also, as the story began to unfold and she started to learn who she was, Arianna became slightly obtuse. For someone that has wanted answers to her questions throughout her whole existence, she sure wasn’t able to accept the answers no matter how many times things were explained.
Overall The Legend of the Blue Eyes was a good read. I am interested to see how the trilogy unfolds throughout the next two books. I’m fairly certain this author is going to be on my stalking… er, I mean my automatic “to read” list in the future. If you love YA paranormal with a unique twist, you’ll want to grab a copy of this book!
